Biography
Before Chaplin ever tugged his cane, two Dutch jokers were already chasing each other across the kinetoscope’s narrow strip. In 1900, the year Queen Wilhelmina still had no idea what a “close-up” meant, Piet Hesse and his partner Solser stepped in front of a crank camera and turned a Leiden alleyway into slapstick history—then, six years later, reloaded the gag for a second reel. A decade on, Hesse swapped custard pies for domestic drama, fronting the 1915 short Have You Heard of Schellevis-Mie?, proving that the same man who could pratfall could also break hearts.
