Biography
A daughter of Agha, Alger—17 May 1874—she stepped from the blistering North-African sun into the gaslight of Paris and let the world name her Polaire. Three shadows on celluloid still keep her flickering alive: the cunning Zouza (1911), the repentant soul of Le dernier pardon (1913), and the quick-witted Sparrow (1914). Half a century later, on 14 October 1939, the Marne wrapped her in cool twilight at Champigny-sur-Marne, closing the curtain on the Algerian-French firefly the cameras once adored.
