Biography
A crisp spring morning—21 March 1868—marked Ralph Dean’s first curtain-call, though no footlights yet glowed for him. By 1917 he had slipped behind the camera and in front of it, shaping three one-reel stories that raced through nickelodeons that year: the stormy romance *The Rainbow*, the shadowy thriller *The Accomplice*, and the bittersweet lullaby *A Song of Sixpence*. Six years after that creative burst, the final reel ran out: Dean died in New York City on 15 September 1923, leaving the city’s sidewalks still flickering with the after-images he helped create.
