Biography
A midwinter baby, Rapley Holmes drew his first breath on 1 June 1868 amid the snow-smudged streets of St. Marys, Ontario. By the early 1910s he had traded small-town quiet for the hiss of arc lamps and the clamour of silent sets, lending his narrow, expressive face to One Wonderful Night (1914), then diving head-first into the cliff-hanger serial Gloria’s Romance (1916) and the domestic satire The Servant Question (1920). Off-screen he shared life, lines and last names with fellow performer Gerda Holmes. Sixty years after that first Canadian winter, he closed the circle, dying quietly in Strathroy, Ontario on 11 January 1928.
