Biography
Anna, Illinois, greeted the world to Raymond Wells on 14 October 1880, and from that quiet Midwestern start he sprinted toward footlights and flickering film. Behind the camera he conjured the urban intrigue of *Mr. Dolan of New York* (1917) and the tropical fever dream *The Lure of the South Seas* (1928); in front of it he set hearts alight in *Love Aflame* the same year the doughboys shipped out. Three decades of celluloid later, the lights dimmed for him in Los Angeles on 9 August 1941, but the reels he spun keep turning.
