Biography

Lillian St. Cyr entered the world on February 13, 1884, on the Winnebago Reservation in Nebraska. She was the daughter of Julia De Cora, a Winnebago, and Mitchell St. Cyr, whose lineage blended French‑Canadian and Sauk roots. After completing her studies at the Carlisle Indian Industrial School in Pennsylvania in 1902, she adopted the stage name Red Wing and launched a film career that began with numerous shorts for Biograph, Bison and Pathe. In 1914 she secured a starring part in *The Squaw Man*, one of Hollywood’s earliest feature‑length Westerns. Red Wing married fellow filmmaker James Young Deer (also known as James Young Johnson). She stepped away from the screen in the 1920s and spent her later years in New York City, where she passed away on March 13, 1974.
