Biography
Auckland Street, Dunedin, greeted the first sunrise of 1881 with the cries of Reynolds Denniston, a boy who would trade New Zealand’s southern chill for the flicker of silver-sheet dreams. By 1915 he had stepped into Australia’s blistering outback to play the bushranging lead in *The Loyal Rebel*, sending the nation’s silent-era audiences into cheers. Twenty-one years later he slipped into Hollywood’s talkie glow, portraying a gossip-column editor tangled in *Love Letters of a Star*. Off-screen he paired his life with fellow performer Valentine Sidney, the two sharing spotlights and wedding bands. The curtain finally fell on 29 January 1943 in Manhattan, where the city that never sleeps recorded the final breath of a Kiwi who had spoken to the world through celluloid.
