Biography
A windstorm of matinee-idol frenzy swept America when Washington-born Richard Buhler stepped onstage in the 1890s; critics swore no footlight had ever shone on a more breathtaking leading man. At six-foot-plus, his raven hair rippling like a night tide, Buhler parlayed that stage magnetism into a brief but memorable screen career: in 1914 Edgar Lewis cast him at Fox as silk-gloved lords and bedside physicians, and in 1915-16 the Lubin company kept the prescription going with more silver-screen dramas. Only a handful of films survive, yet each frame still smolders with the same presence that once emptied ticket booths. He returned to his hometown for the final curtain, dying there at forty-nine, the ageless face finally stilled but the legend already lodged in theatrical lore.
