Biography
Cleveland, Ohio, welcomed Riley Hatch on 2 September 1862, and by the time the cameras began to roll he had already honed a stage presence that leapt effortlessly onto the silver screen. Between 1915 and 1925 he anchored three cinematic landmarks: he mined moral turmoil in The Conquest of Canaan, rode the rugged currents of The Plunderer, and prowled the jazz-lit streets of Night Life of New York. Off-screen he shared his life with Florence Estelle Wiesner, the woman who stood beside him through every curtain call and close-up. The final reel faded on 6 September 1925 in Bay Shore, Long Island, New York, closing a career that helped shape the grammar of early American film.
