Biography

Born under the hot noon sun of Trivigno, Basilicata, on 5 August 1882, Robert G. Vignola crossed the Atlantic with dreams bigger than his suitcase and wound up inventing Hollywood before Hollywood knew its own name. He first stepped in front of the camera, then slid behind it, guiding shadows through the flickering worlds of The Knife (1918) and the vengeful glamour of More Deadly Than the Male (1919). Three decades later he closed the final reel with Broken Dreams (1933), sealing a career that had helped turn flickers into an art. The lights dimmed for good on 25 October 1953 in Hollywood, California, but the pictures he set in motion still spin through projectors and memories alike.
