Biography
Adrian, Michigan, welcomed Robert Gaillard on 14 November 1868, and from that quiet start he sprinted toward the nascent flicker of moving pictures. Behind the camera and in front of it, he shaped stories audiences were only beginning to understand—first as the quixotic Orlando in 1912’s As You Like It, then guiding the 1913 narrative trail The Golden Pathway, and finally steering the 1919 caper Beating the Odds. Seventy-two bright years later, on 24 September 1941, the lights dimmed for the last time in Glendale, California, closing the frame on a pioneer who helped teach the world how to watch.
