Biography

A Hoosier by birth—Vermillion County, 1 September 1862—Robert Rogers swapped Indiana quiet for the hiss of arc lamps and the smell of celluloid. Within two whirlwind years he gave audiences Helene of the North (1915) and the doom-laden The Thread of Life (1916), sealing a reputation as a face you couldn’t forget even in flickering silence. Off-screen he doubled the drama, wedding first Louise Mackintosh and later Emma B. Smith. The final curtain fell sooner than it should: 15 December 1916, New York City, the lights dimming for good at fifty-four.
