Biography
Torella dei Lombardi, a hill-ringed village in Campania, greeted its most restless son on 5 August 1879. Within three decades Roberto Roberti had swapped the quiet stone streets for the flicker of carbon-arc lamps, stepping in front of—and then behind—the camera. In the single whirlwind year of 1916 he released a triptych that fixed his name to the early Italian cinema: the mythic sweep of Meteora, the aching triangle of Passa l’amore, and the velvet gloom of Tenebre. Between takes he returned home long enough to wed actress Bice Valerian, anchoring his heart while his imagination wandered. The journey ended where it began: on 9 January 1959 the same Campania breeze that once rocked his cradle carried him gently back to the same soil.
