Biography
Barely twenty-one, Ruth Hartman stepped off a Chicago streetcar and onto a 1914 film set, trading the Midwestern April chill for the klieg-light heat of two frantic one-reelers: *The Last Chapter* and *The Man Who Couldn’t Lose*. Between takes she collected two surnames—first Fahner, then Blackwell—though the camera always knew her as Hartman. After the credits rolled she slipped from marquee lights into California sunshine, living quietly until 9 July 1956, when Hollywood’s hills closed the final scene.
