Biography

Born in Providence on 29 May 1892, Ruth Shepley stepped off the Rhode Island shore and onto the flickering screens of early Hollywood. Between 1915 and 1922 she slipped into three very different skins: the nimble heroine of Alias Jimmy Valentine, the Tudor courtier of When Knighthood Was in Flower, and the romantic pivot of Admirers Three. Off-camera she shared her life with two husbands—surgeon Dr. Beverly C. Smith and, later, George Sarre. The curtain fell for the last time on 16 October 1951 in New York City, the metropolis that had become her final stage.
