Biography

New Orleans, 1888: Sidney Shields drew her first breath amid jazz and river-fog, then stepped into the flicker of early Hollywood before most Americans had ever seen a movie. Within a single whirlwind year she faced the camera twice—first as the haunted lead in The Clemenceau Case, then braving blizzards and barking rifles in The Bulldogs of the Trail—both 1915. Off-screen she took the name of actor Edward H. Robins, sharing a marriage that outlasted her brief but bright screen life. Forty-five years after she left the lights behind, the curtain fell for good on 19 September 1960 in New York City, the same town that now keeps her films safe in climate-controlled vaults and her legacy alive in every rediscovered frame.
