Biography
A native of Los Angeles, Tisdale Justin Dow was the eldest of five children born to Irene Eladist Bowen and real estate developer Wilbur Olen Dow Sr. His pursuit of the arts led him across the country to Adelphi College in Long Island, New York, where his draftsmanship earned him a gold medal in 1911 and a place for his cartoons in the Los Angeles Herald. Following a two-year tenure on the stage, Dow pivoted to the silent screen with Kalem Studios. His signature jet-black hair often saw him cast in international supporting roles, notably starring alongside Alice Joyce in films such as "The Vanderhoff Affair," "The Swamp Fox," "The Plains of Abraham," and "The Barefoot Boy." His career eventually evolved into production management, where he helmed Kalem’s Jacksonville, Florida branch. Dow’s journey concluded in Oakland, California, though he returned to his roots for burial at Evergreen Cemetery in East Los Angeles. He is also remembered as the uncle of the renowned Olympic athlete Bowen Stassforth.
