Biography
Terry McGovern began boxing professionally at the age of seventeen. McGovern won the vacant world bantamweight title on September 12, 1899, by defeating Englishman Thomas Palmer in the first round. On January 9, 1900, McGovern relinquished his bantamweight belt to battle George Dixon for the world featherweight title, which he won by knockout in the eighth round. On November 28, 1901, he lost the title after six title defenses, all of which ended in knockouts, when American Young Corbett II defeated him in the second round. McGovern kept boxing occasionally until 1908. In 1990, he was elected to the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
