Biography
Boston welcomed Thomas W. Ross on 22 January 1875, and from that day forward the stage and screen had a quietly magnetic presence. Audiences first noticed him as the racetrack-loving hero of the 1913 one-reeler *Checkers*; eight years later he traded silks for social satire in *Fine Feathers*; and in 1940 he slipped into the shoes of an exasperated small-town father in *Seventeen*. After the cameras dimmed, Ross settled in Torrington, Connecticut, where he died on 14 November 1959, leaving behind a trio of films that still flicker with his understated charm.
