Biography

Born into a family of legal professionals, Thurlow Bergen initially followed in his father’s footsteps, pursuing a law degree in Washington D.C. Yet it was the stage that truly ignited his passion, prompting a dramatic career shift. After founding a critically acclaimed touring ensemble that honed his craft nationwide, he migrated to New York, where he became a mainstay of Broadway’s golden age. Sharing the spotlight with icons like Florence Roberts, Percy Haswell, Mary Shaw, Lionel Barrymore, Milton Sills, Lionel Atwill, and Charles Richman, he cemented his reputation as a versatile stage performer. While his film career flourished from 1914 to 1920, with a final silent film bow in 1920 marking his cinematic swan song, Bergen returned to the theater, remaining active in live productions—including choice Broadway roles—until the 1940s.
