Chattanooga, Tennessee, welcomed Tom Walsh on 9 January 1863, and from that day forward he carried the South’s storytelling spark onto silent-era screens. Between 1914 and 1920 he stepped in front of—and occasionally behind—the camera, shaping the serial thriller The Trey o’ Hearts, polishing the comedy caper The Bandbox, and steering the drama From Now On. Audiences may have caught his face or felt his steady hand as assistant director, but either way his fingerprints linger on early Hollywood. The final curtain fell on 25 April 1925 in New York City, yet the flicker of Walsh’s work still dances through the reels he left behind.
