Biography

On a summer day in 1878, the wheat fields around San Giorgio di Lomellina rustled as Umberto Paradisi drew his first breath. By his twenties he had swapped the quiet Lomellina air for the flicker of carbon-arc lamps, stepping in front of the camera for The Chimney Sweeps of the Valley of Aosta (1914) and then calling the shots on La donna e i bruti (1920) and the Neapolitan-to-Roman victory lap A noi! Dalla sagra di Napoli al trionfo di Roma (1922). Actor, director, pioneer—he kept working until Turin closed the curtain on 21 June 1933, three days short of his fifty-fifth birthday.
