Biography
Bedford, Bedfordshire welcomed Una Venning on 12 November 1892, and from that modest start she grew into a performer whose crisp voice and comic timing lit up post-war British screens. Audiences remember her razor-sharp schoolmistress in both the 1947 and 1949 film versions of *The Happiest Days of Your Life*, while her long-running appearances on *BBC Sunday-Night Theatre* (from 1950) kept living-room televisions crackling with life for the better part of a decade. Away from the spotlight she shared her life with two husbands—first Malcolm Cherry, later G. Hamilton Gay. Her final curtain fell on 9 March 1985 in Datchet, Berkshire, closing a chapter that had quietly shaped British screen comedy for nearly forty years.
