Biography
Ottawa, 10 October 1876: Victor Benoit enters the world, the river city’s chill already in his lungs. By his late thirties he has traded quiet Canadian winters for the flickering dusk of early Hollywood, slipping into villainous skin for Adolph Lestina’s camera in The Parasites (1914). A year later he helps immortalize the vamp archetype in A Fool There Was (1915), and in 1916 he tightens the dramatic screws in The Chain Invisible. The lights dim, the prints fade, and Benoit exits the stage, 66 winters later, on 16 January 1943 in Newburgh, New York, the Hudson’s fog rolling in like a final curtain.
