Biography
Violet Horner, the second daughter of Sidney Herbert Horner, a Welsh-born music hall performer, and Pauline Tranter, his Belfast-born counterpart, was steeped in the performing arts from an early age. Her youth in Brooklyn, New York, saw her grace amateur stages and lend her voice to a church choir, where she was eventually discovered, paving her way into the nascent film industry. In a 1913 interview with Gertrude M. Price for the Chicago "Day Book," Horner candidly explained her move from church soloist to leading lady, stating her yearning for "more excitement and a chance to climb over the fence and look out over the world" as the driving force behind her decision to pursue "pictures." When her cinematic star eventually waned, Horner transitioned to vaudeville, enchanting audiences as a singer. Her life later found new anchors with her second marriage to a Brooklyn dentist, followed by their retirement to Florida. Far from leaving the stage behind, she continued to share her expertise, offering voice and acting lessons and orchestrating amateur theatricals with local groups, including the Ladies Auxiliary of her husband's American Legion Post.
