Biography
A restless streak carried Violet Knights from the misty shores of Anacortes, Washington—where she first opened her eyes on 15 May 1894—to the flicker of early motion-picture sets. By 1913 she was already braving studio flames in Trapped in a Forest Fire, and the following year she stepped into the one-reel mystery The Return of Helen Redmond. Talkie technology arrived just in time for her to haunt the 1931 sound serial The Phantom, sealing her place among the pioneers who survived both silents and sound. Off-screen she joined lives with fellow performer Fred MacKaye. More than four decades after her last close-up, she slipped away quietly on 13 June 1973 in Newport Beach, California, leaving behind a slim but indelible strip of celluloid history.
