Biography
On a summer Tuesday in 1876, Virginia Foltz drew her first breath in San Jose, California, when Santa Clara Valley orchards still outnumbered streetlights. By 1916 she had traded apricot-scented breezes for klieg lights, stepping before the camera in three silent features released that single whirlwind year: *Gloriana*, *The Call of the Cumberlands*, and *Ben Blair*. Off-screen, she said “I do” twice—first to John Walz Catron, later to Leslie David Martin—charting a life as eventful as any melodrama. Her final curtain fell among the adobe shadows of Santa Fe, New Mexico, on 14 June 1955, closing a story that had stretched from California’s frontier childhood to the dawn of talking pictures.
