Biography
A Lombard infant in 1869, Vittorio Rossi Pianelli grew into the kind of restless spirit who could channel electricity across stage and screen. While Europe teetered on the edge of war, he stepped behind and in front of the camera, breathing life into three now-legendary silents: the eerie Il vampiro (1914), the transcendental Sul limite del Nirvana, and the muscular melodrama Il romanzo di un atleta, both released in 1915. Actor, director, shapeshifter—he navigated the birth of Italian cinema until curtains finally fell for him in Rome, 1953.
