Biography
A Bronx summer delivered Vivian Tobin on 12 August 1902, and Manhattan’s footlights soon claimed her. By 1932 she was bathing in Nero’s Rome as the beguiled widow in Cecil B. DeMille’s The Sign of the Cross; six years later she had audiences laughing their jitters away in the screwball romp The Jitters; in 1942 she turned postal chaos into comic gold in Mail Trouble. Off-screen she shared her life with playwright Karl O. Von Hagen. A full century later, on 6 August 2002, she drew her final breath in Rancho Palos Verdes, California, leaving behind a slim but sparkling film legacy.
