Biography
Born in Philadelphia in 1850, W.A. Whitecar stepped onto the stage long before the camera began to roll. A veteran of theater, he slipped into the new medium of moving pictures just as the art was finding its feet, turning up in two 1914 one-reelers: the ten-part mystery serial *The Man Who Disappeared* and the light-hearted short *By the Aid of a Film*. Off-screen, his leading role belonged to Isabelle D. Melville, his wife and lifelong scene partner. Whitecar’s final curtain fell in New York City on 19 June 1923.
