Biography
July 1871 found Walter Hitchcock drawing his first breath in the salt-tinged coastal town of Newcastle, Maine. Within four decades he had slipped into the new flickering art of cinema, leaving silhouettes on three early features: the 1914 collapse of *The Walls of Jericho*, the 1915 march of *The Girl I Left Behind Me*, and the gavel-cracking drama *The Auction Block* released in 1917. Off-screen, he shared his life with actress Teresa Michelena. His own final curtain fell on 23 June 1917, the lights dimming for good in New York City.
