Biography
A Chattanooga summer greeted Walter James on 3 June 1882, and from that Tennessee heat he stepped onto screens nationwide. Between flickers of silver, he stalked as the sinister chauffeur in *The Monster* (1925), traded comic jabs with Buster Keaton in *Battling Butler* (1926), and lent weathered authority to the tenements of *Street Scene* (1931). Off-camera, he shared his life with Ida James—herself a performer—until her death around 1930. Forty years after his first breath, he took his last in Gardena, California, on 27 June 1946.
