Biography

On 9 January 1874, in the bustling Baltic port of Danzig—then German, today Polish—Walter Turszinsky drew his first breath. Within four decades he would charge through Germany’s fledgling film world, scripting and staging stories that flickered across nickelodeon screens. Audiences of 1914 met his camera’s eye in *The Dawn of Freedom* and *Gretchen Wendland*; a year later he unleashed the bandit escapades of *Der springende Hirsch oder Die Diebe von Günstersburg*. Berlin, the city that had become his professional crucible, claimed him back on 21 May 1915, closing the curtain on a career just as cinema itself was learning to run.
