Biography
Horseheads, New York, coughed up William Desmond in 1878, and before the century turned he was already hammering jokes and melodrama across the vaudeville circuits. By 1915 he owned his own troupe and stepped in front of a camera for the first time in “Kilmeny.” Early prestige roles gave way to dust-choked canyons and Saturday-matinée cliffhangers; Desmond’s square jaw and easy grin soon made him a staple of Western daydreams. Talkies arrived just as his forty-ninth birthday did, and Hollywood—never sentimental—pared him down to sidekicks, sheriffs, and background muscle. He kept saddling up anyway, riding out the silents, the Depression, and a World War, still clocking in on studio lots until the mid-1940s.
