On a summer Wednesday—13 August 1875—William Fables drew his first breath in New Jersey, a state better known for turnpikes than turn-of-century cinema. Within two decades he had slipped behind the camera, gifting the silent era three one-reel wonders: 1914’s eerie *Fantasma*, followed in rapid-fire 1917 by courthouse drama *The Last Sentence* and the carnival romance *The Barker*.
