Biography
A Dubliner drawn to footlights and flicker-film alike, William J. Butler entered the world in 1860 on Irish soil, then crossed the Atlantic to trade the stage’s velvet hush for the whirring crank of early movie cameras. Between 1910 and 1917 he lent face and pen to A Summer Idyll, The Price She Paid, and The Girl Who Didn’t Think, stories that unreeled in nickelodeon twilight while the world reordered itself outside. Three decades after leaving Ireland, he closed his final scene in Manhattan on 27 January 1927, the city’s neon still bright beyond the hospital window.
