Biography

A midwinter baby, William Nigh drew his first breath on 12 October 1881 amid the dairy lands of Berlin, Wisconsin. Within three decades he had slipped behind the camera, steering silent-era audiences through the rowdy classrooms of School Days (1921), the scandalous opulence of Born Rich (1924), and the bare-knuckled redemption of Notorious Gallagher; or, His Great Triumph (1916). Earlier, he had even stepped before the lens as an actor, trading lines in the flickering glow of nickelodeon infancy. His final curtain fell on 27 November 1955 in Burbank, California, closing a career that helped shepherd American cinema from its footlights-and-paper prints youth toward the sound-steamed future.
