Biography
Long before streaming queues, William Sloan stepped in front of the crank of a hand-cranked camera. Arriving in 1863, he spent six decades honing a face that could speak in silence; audiences first noticed it in 1915 when he chased a runaway dad through What Happened to Father. Two years later he steered Love’s Pilgrimage across the Atlantic, and by 1918 he was tangled in The Embarrassment of Riches—three one-reelers that still flicker in archives as proof of his early-screen staying power. Sloan’s final curtain rang down on 12 January 1933 in Amityville, Long Island, the small-town lights dimming on a pioneer who helped movies learn how to move.
