Biography
William T. Carleton first drew breath in 1859 amid the fog of England, and by 1915 he had traded London’s gaslight for the flicker of silent-film arc lamps, slipping into the role of Pinkerton’s callous officer in *Madame Butterfly*. A year later he stepped into the giddy whirl of *Gloria’s Romance*, then surfaced again in 1919 as the almost-groom in *Almost Married*. The curtain finally fell on 28 September 1930, far across the Atlantic in St. John’s, Newfoundland, where the North Atlantic winds carried his final exit.
