Biography

Born in Copenhagen in 1779, Adam Oehlenschläger emerged as a pivotal figure in early 19th-century Danish literature, leading the charge for the Romantic movement in his native country. His imagination was profoundly shaped by Norse myths, a theme that began to manifest with the release of his debut poetry collection, Digte (Poems), in 1802. Oehlenschläger's prolific output spanned various genres, including the enchanting St. John's Eve Play (1803). He delved into historical narratives with works such as Earl Hakon (1807), Baldur the Good (1808), and Axel and Valborg (1809). His versatility further shone through the poignant tragedy Correggio (1811) and the fantastical Aladdin of the Wonderful Lamp (1820), solidifying his legacy as one of Denmark's most influential literary voices.
