Biography

Southwark, 1876: A.E. Coleby enters the world amid the clang of the Thames-side docks and already seems to hear the whirr of hand-cranked cameras. By 1907 he is coaxing polite Londoners into comic chaos for Serving a Summons, then, a year later, staging cloak-and-dagger treachery in A Traitor to the King. Two decades on, after hundreds of reels and as many ideas, he crafts the intimate drama Unto Each Other (1929), proving his storytelling pulse still beats strong. The cameras finally stop for him on 15 July 1930 in Westminster, but the flicker of the images he set loose keeps moving.
