Biography

London welcomed Arthur Shirley on 17 February 1853, and the stage and page became his lifelong playgrounds. Between footlights and ink-stained scripts he built a career that flickered across the silver screen: he gave life to the barrack-yard hero of *Tommy Atkins* in 1928, marched audiences through the desert saga *Under Two Flags* in 1916, and stirred tears as the devoted Londoner in *My Old Dutch* in 1926. Offstage, he shared his days—and many a curtain call—with Florence Mary Allen, his wife and steadying star. The city that first heard his cries bade him farewell on 22 August 1925, closing the final act in the same streets where his story began.
