Biography
On 11 July 1893, in the coastal town of Pori, Finland, Asser Pohjanheimo first opened his eyes to a world he would later help the rest of us see. Behind the crank of a hand-wound camera he became the quiet eye of early Finnish cinema, coaxing light and shadow into stories: the inheritance intrigue of *Salainen perintömääräys* (1914), the playful hunt for *Pirteä ja kadonnut kori* (1914), and the maritime dreams of *Nuori luotsi* (1913). Between frames he also put words to paper, turning observations into prose. Forty-three years later, on 14 April 1937, the final reel rolled for him in Karkku, Finland, but the images he captured keep spinning.
