Biography
On 4 March 1879, Fürth, Bavaria, greeted the arrival of Bernhard Kellermann, the storyteller who would one day burrow beneath mountains with words. Page after page, he carved out Der Tunnel—first as a novel in 1915, then twice more as a screen drama in 1933—turning the same subterranean dream into a triptych of flickering light. Off the page, he shared life’s journey with two wives: Else Michaelis, the Berlin doctor’s daughter, and later the American journalist Mabel Giberson. On 17 October 1951, his own final scene closed quietly in Klein Glienicke, a lakeside quarter of Potsdam, leaving the echo of trains that never needed tracks still rattling through German imaginations.
