Biography
Seventeen May 1875: a New York morning greeted Bertram Marburgh’s first cry. By 1915 he was already trading Manhattan’s sidewalks for flickering arc lights, slipping into the nickelodeon romance *Marrying Money*. Three years later he stalked the frame of *The Eagle’s Eye*, serial cliffs still damp with fresh paint. Talkies arrived; he answered with the gallows hush of *Before I Hang* in 1940, scripting doom in velvet shadow. Thirty-two thousand sunrises after his first, on 22 August 1956, the San Fernando Valley claimed him—Woodland Hills, quiet, the projectors finally dimmed.
