Behind the camera he became a conjurer of images, turning 1915’s Frau Annas Pilgerfahrt into a silent odyssey of faith, then shaking audiences with the family-secrets drama Die Sippschaft in 1920. A year later he locked viewers inside the shadow-soaked rooms of Das Haus der Qualen, proving that the fears we cannot name are the ones that follow us home.
