Biography
On 10 September 1885, the Ligurian seaside town of Taggia welcomed Carmine Gallone into the world. Over the next eighty-seven years he would become one of Italy’s busiest storytellers behind the camera, scripting and staging epics such as Scipione l’africano (1937), The Life of Giuseppe Verdi (1938) and Odessa in fiamme (1942). His off-screen co-star was the actress Soava Gallone—his wife and creative partner for life. The curtain finally dropped on 12 March 1973 in the hilltop town of Frascati, Lazio, but the films he forged continue to flicker.
