Biography
A winter baby delivered in Manhattan on 29 January 1875, Cecil Spooner grew up to swap the city’s clangor for the klieg lights of early cinema. Between treading boards and calling shots, she steered three now-creaky treasures—Hansel and Gretel and The Prince and the Pauper, both released in 1909, and the big-top melodrama Nell of the Circus in 1914—while her off-screen role as Mrs. Charles E. Blaney played to a quieter house. The final curtain fell on 13 May 1953 in Sherman Oaks, California, but the flicker she helped spark keeps rattling through the reels.
