Biography
Concord, New Hampshire, greeted the world with Charles Hale Hoyt on 26 July 1860—an arrival that would later ricochet between newsprint footlights and flickering silent reels. Pen in one hand, greasepaint in the other, he spun regional gossip into stage comedies that kept Gilded-Age audiences roaring; three of those plays—A Bunch of Keys, A Texas Steer, and the posthumously filmed A Midnight Bell—refused to die, resurfacing in 1915 and 1921 as early screen farces. Offstage, he collected two marriages—to actress Flora Walsh and, later, to Caroline Miskel—before his own final curtain fell in New York City on 20 November 1900, aged forty.
