Biography
Born among the salt-breezed streets of New Bern, North Carolina, on 29 January 1870, Charles L. Gaskill grew up to trade small-town quiet for the flicker of early movie palaces. Behind the camera he conjured silken fantasies—*A Princess of Bagdad* and *A Sister to Carmen* both premiered in 1913, followed a year later by the brooding mystery *The Strange Story of Sylvia Gray*. Off-screen, his leading ladies were not confined to celluloid: first he wed actress-producer Helen Gardner, later Virginia Archer Waldrop-Gaskill. The final curtain fell on 9 December 1943 in Los Angeles, California, closing a life spent spinning stories out of light and shadow.
